Hey everyone, welcome back to the channel. This is the Review Dad. Today, I'm going to be reviewing the JBL Charge 5 portable speaker. Stick around cause this little thing has got quite a punch. Let's get right into it.

Battery Indicator

Play from here [0:16]

The JBL Charge 5 has a battery indicator, and as you charge it, you can see that little piece flashing, so it charges and it fills up, and when it's full, it's fully charged. Once it's fully charged, which is roughly 4 hours, we can then look at connecting it.

Bluetooth Pairing

Play from here [0:30]

Switch on the battery by pushing the power on button, and then press the Bluetooth button on the battery, which gives that little beep, and then, that will give out the signal for your phone to then connect to it. Scan under your Bluetooth settings, and then you will see at the bottom or however your phone is configured, you will see a JBL Charge 5 option. Tap on that, and then what it will do is it will ask to pair the speaker, and once it pairs, it will make another sound to show that the pairing is successful. Now, your phone is connected, and the Bluetooth speaker is now your output for media and sound. It's pretty easy to do.

Let's play some music

Play from here [1:05]

Watch/listen to the music from 1:33 to 1:49.

What I'll do now is select Spotify, and we are going to play some music via the JBL Charge 5, so you can hear what it sounds like. The phone I'm filming with will pick up the sound. It's not going to be a great quality of sound coming through, but what I will do then is film a YouTube video that does sound tests, and that I will try and record on the microphone that I'm using now, so hopefully, that's nice and clear for everyone to hear. Let's hear what the music sounds like.

Notice the bouncing action

Play from here [1:49]

Watch the action from 2:03 to 2:18.

As you could hear, as I rotated the JBL Charge 5 around, the twitter sound comes more out from the logo of the JBL, and also the bass obviously comes out of either side of the speaker where those little logos were bouncing, so that's pretty cool. The volume was only halfway, so this is a pretty loud speaker for the size of it. It's pretty awesome. I'm pretty impressed.

Quick Response

Play from here [2:20]

Observe the quick response from 2:20 to 2:48.

As I pause the music, it's really responsive, really quick. There's no lag. So again, over here, I just wanted to film the side of the JBL Charge 5 where the base comes out and how that logo bounces. It just looks pretty awesome. I'm actually going to film this in some slow mode, so you can see what it looks like and I will talk over that again, telling you some more stuff about the speaker. But again, I'm really impressed with this little speaker. It's got quite a punch for the size that this little thing is.

Slow Motion

Play from here [2:50]

Watch the action is slow motion from 2:51 to 3:16.

Here, we have the JBL Charge 5 in slow motion, and you'll see that bouncing up and down. While that's happening and you're enjoying the visuals, this speaker has 20 hours of playtime. That's also dependent on how much volume you use or bass you use in songs and things like that. 20 hours is pretty good. It's also IP67 waterproof and dustproof rated, so if you take it to the beach or near a pool and it gets splashed, that's okay. It also doubles up as a power bank, so you can charge your phone or iPad if you need some extra energy just to last that little bit longer.

JBL PartyBoost

Play from here [3:22]

The other thing is that JBL PartyBoost button that looks like an Infinity sign on the JBL Charge 5. If you use that, you can actually connect up to 100 of these speakers that have this feature enabled on them, so you could have 100 speakers playing the same song at the same time and have a really big party.

JBL App

Play from here [3:42]

Let's now have a look at the JBL app, which picks up these speakers automatically. I opened the app once it was installed, and it picked up the JBL Charge 5. It then comes up with a few settings and options that you have, so you got a Feedback Tone. You got some PartyBoost options. You got the User Guide, and right at the top, we have a software update, which is available, and that's what we are going to do now. Once again, that PartyBoost can have up to 100 speakers with that option on it, so if you have 100 speakers around you that have that option, you can have 100 speakers playing the same song or sound or whatever.

Firmware Update

Play from here [4:19]

Let's look at the new firmware update that comes with the speaker. Obviously, when you get the JBL Charge 5, it might not have the latest updates, and this is the app to give you that update. Run that. It takes about 25 minutes to download and set up, and then once that's done, it takes about 6 to 7 minutes to update the actual speaker. Once the update is done, it will show it's successful. Click "Let's party," and you'll see the interface has changed. They've now included an equalizer, so if you're playing music through Spotify, you can come here and move the equalizer Bass, Mid, and the Treble to different volume settings. That's pretty cool. It works quite well, and it's really responsive. That's what the JBL app does, and that's how you update when there's a firmware update.

Frequency Capabilities Test

Play from here [5:07]

Watch the test from 5:21 to 9:09.

Now, I'm going to run a few tests from a YouTube video that does some treble tests, bass tests, and just normal speaker range and that. I'll let that run, and you guys can have a look and see how the JBL Charge 5 responds.

My Recommendation

Play from here [9:10]

Okay, those are some of the speaker tests that I ran, and the speaker performed really well. The bass is really bassy and punchy. The treble is nice, clear, and crisp. Overall, there's no rattling or any buzzing sounds like the app was saying in the video. It's really a good speaker. I'm really impressed with it. The volume is so loud for such a small speaker. You can see that against the phone, and that's an S21 Ultra Samsung phone. The speaker is not big at all, and the volume is just amazing. I'm really impressed with it. If you guys are looking for a speaker that can do all of this: portable, lasts long, acts as a power bank, connects to other speakers, really quick with Bluetooth, and connects to an Oculus too, the JBL Charge 5 is the speaker to go for. I've also got a video on the Oculus if you want to have a look, but overall if you want one of these speakers, I'd definitely get one. They are awesome.
