Hey, everyone, it's Peter Zalums GriniFlix Adventure-8. Welcome to another video, and today, I'm in Sydney harbor. That's still within my 5K zone of exercise, and that's what I'm doing, as always, exercise plus photography. Today, I've got my trusty Nikon D700 and also one of my travel lenses that I have had for a while. I thought that maybe it's a good time to review this lens and see how good it is for travel, which is a bit ironic because no one can travel right now. I'll probably put a different twist to it, how I'm using this lens around the harbor, what sort of shots I'm taking, etc. The lens is the Nikon NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G, automatic focus. That's the lens, and the camera is the D700. Let's get on with the show.

The good thing about the Nikon D700 is that it's a tough and robust camera. It's weather-sealed, which means you can throw it around, take it with you anywhere, and not really to be too concerned if it gets a bit dusty. You can just sort of get a little bit of water over it, clean it off, and it's good to go. The Nikon NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G is also a great lens in the sense that, yes, it is still weather-sealed. The good thing about it is all its movement is within the lens. I've got a lens filter on here, so if there's no lens filter, then the moving mechanism is open to the elements. As soon as you put a lens filler on it, a UV filter or something like that, effectively, you're sealing off the lens.

If you're in a sandy, dust environment, for example, for my Central Australia trips and off-road trips and motorcycle trips around the world, I'm always out in the elements, in the rain, the dust, and snow occasionally. If you can protect your lens and prevent the elements from actually getting inside, then it's great. You can feel more comfortable about taking photographs in extreme conditions. Like most zoom lenses, it comes with its own lens hood. It's not a very fast lens at 3.5-4.5, so don't expect any bokeh out of it. You can actually get bokeh when you're shooting really close. The Nikon NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G has a focus point right down to about 0.27 meters. So 27 centimeters, very close. The film UNCLEAR is 27 centimeters, so I should be able to take this photograph a bit UNCLEAR, but that's fine.

Yes, you've got manual focus and automatic focus. We have our zoom ring here, and your focus ring is there. When you're focusing to infinity, it will go past Infinity and will get out of focus at infinity. Like with most of these type of lenses, you'll probably find that the infinity mark is somewhere right smack in the middle of infinity. On automatic focus, it tends to go pretty much to infinity straight away. I'm photographing these boats that we have here, and they are probably about 30 meters away. With the Nikon NIKKOR 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5G, because it's wide angle, it just goes straight to infinity at 3.5. There's very little movement between 1 meter and infinity, so in most cases, everything is in focus. I can get my feet in focus and get the boat in focus, sort of. I'll try and be a bit more artistic with the photos. I took some in the morning. I took some in the evening already. I'll take some around here and then we'll put the video together.

I guess travel will start up again at some stage, end of this year, next year, sometime, and no doubt will get on and about. You would have noticed I've been posting quite regularly three videos a week on the topic of photography and travel. It's around two main categories, which is Nikon photography and also Leica photography. The Nikon videos tend to be around my digital SLR's, so the older ones the D700, the D500, D850, and the Z6 system I use mainly for my video in the office. My Leica gear. I just love using the Leica M series rangefinder cameras and their incredible lenses. I guess that's my artistic side comes through the Leica side, but obviously with the Nikon stuff also. I hope that's appealing to your interests and you're finding these videos informative as well as entertaining. It's always going to be a combination of those two major criteria.
